New lives for Sunday School teachers
Rachel and Jackie Randell, who were both KH Sunday School teachers, have graduated from college and high school, respectively. Rachel graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Honors Thesis in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware. She is spending the summer in London as a part of a research exchange program with the Imperial College. In September she begins work in a laboratory at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and plans to attend medical school the following year.

Jackie received 2 Senior awards from Jordan High School, one from the English Department as "the most inspiring writer" and another for Journalism. She was Editor of the Falcon's Cry newspaper and her editorial columns won first place in the high school competitions sponsored by the NC Press Club and the National Federation of Press Women. Jackie is visiting London, Paris and Amsterdam this summer and will work as "Nature Jackie" at Camp Riverlea in Durham. She will attend Johns Hopkins in the fall.

Our Sunday School is very active. We meet two Sundays a month from 10:00 am to noon in Murphey Hall on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. In the first half hour, the entire congregation enjoys great music, singing and a community warm-up to Sunday School. Then the kids head off to their classrooms to enjoy age-appropriate activities and lessons, while parents often walk to a nearby coffee shop for invigorating conversation. We also frequently offer adult education sessions on Humanistic Judaism for all members of our congregation during Sunday School.

The mission of our education program is to help raise a new generation of young people with a strong grounding in the ethics and culture of Judaism, and to enhance self-respect and responsible behavior. Our Sunday School uses meaningful Jewish literature and historical memory to promote the self-esteem and independent thinking of every student.

Out of these encounters, the students begin to develop a sense of their moral obligation for the welfare of others and the reality of their unique Jewish identity. They also deepen their understanding of their heritage and frequently participate in the congregational community through group sing-alongs, holiday celebrations and presentations to the entire congregation.

What will my kids learn?

Our music is a very special part of our congregational life, whether before Sunday School or at holiday celebrations. Check back soon for songsheets you can download!
